A motorcycle accident claimed the lives of a soldier and his girlfriend on Sunday night along the Chanika-Kisoro road in Kisoro district.
The deceased soldier, Jackson Kwiringiye, was attached to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Jinja College of Logistics and Engineering. Kwiringiye, a resident of Kifumba village in Bukimbiri sub-county, Kisoro district, was riding a motorcycle with his girlfriend, identified as Percy, a resident of Kateretere village in the same sub-county.
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM as the duo traveled from Kanaba sub-county toward Kisoro town. Upon reaching Muganza village, Kwiringiye reportedly lost control of the motorcycle, which overturned. The pair sustained severe head injuries after hitting stones during the crash.
Kwiringiye died instantly, while Percy was rushed to Kisoro Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations suggest speeding as the likely cause of the accident.
He added that the bodies of the deceased are currently at Kisoro hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
