OpenHarry Kane’s trophy hopes suffer another major blow as Bayern Munich teammate Manuel Neuer gets unwanted career first

Bayern Munich are out of the DFB-Pokal, marking the end of one of Harry Kane’s trophy hopes this season.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer summed up the evening, with the German receiving his first ever career red card in the tie with Bayer Leverkusen.

An injury sustained during last weekend’s draw at Borussia Dortmund meant Kane didn’t play in Tuesday night’s clash and his absence was felt with last season’s Bundesliga winners winning the last 16 tie 1-0, courtesy of a second-half goal from former Southampton forward Nathan Tella.

Bayern striker Kane is yet to win a major trophy despite being in two European Championship finals with England, a Champions League final with Tottenham and winning ten Golden Boot awards in his career.

He will now need to rely on winning the Bundesliga or the Champions League to secure silverware this season.

Bayern were on the back foot from early on after Neuer was sent off in the 17th minute.

He came rushing out of his box, taking out an advancing Jeremie Frimpong.

The Leverkusen star was left on the deck as Neuer stayed on his feet and tried to scramble back for the ball.

The 38-year-old was shown a straight red as a result.

He was seen apologising to manager Vincent Kompany as he left the pitch.

Daniel Peretz replaced him for his Bayern debut.

It’s the first ever red card Neuer has received in his senior career.

That means the German has had an incredible run of 866 appearances without being sent for an early bath.

He has been given a yellow card 23 times during his career.

However, none of those cautions have come while playing for Germany.

Neuer has represented his country 124 times and never been booked.

The DFB-Pokal clash’s referee Harm Osmers handed out three yellow cards in addition to Neuer’s red in the opening 22 minutes.

Another two cautions were given out in what was a feisty clash between the 20-time winners of the competition and the current holders.

Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga, though.

Leverkusen are in third, seven points off Kompany’s side and three off second place Eintracht Frankfurt.

In Kane’s debut season at Bayern last term, they finished third, a whopping 18 points off Leverkusen.

They were also knocked out of the cup competitions.
