Tottenham Hotspur vs Roma predictions

What an evening that was for Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite their opponents’ poor form heading into the game, Saturday’s 4-0 demolition of Manchester City must go down as one of Spurs’ greatest ever Premier League results.

The post-match discussion inevitably centred on Pep Guardiola’s side, whose title chances are already looking slim less than a third of the way through the season.

But for all that City were poor, Tottenham were fantastic. They played with typical bravery and sliced through the City rearguard time and time again.

Pleasingly for Ange Postecoglou, his side also showed impressive grit and resilience in the second half to deny City a goal, never mind a point.

“You’ve got to do a bit of everything [against City],” the manager said. “You’ve got to defend, you’ve got to work hard, be disciplined and you’ve got to play football. I thought in all four areas we really got to a really strong level today.”

The key now is to replicate it. Tottenham’s principal problem this season has been their propensity to blow hot and cold. They have too often veered from the sublime to the ridiculous from week to week.

If the north Londoners are to achieve their aims this term (a top-four finish and a piece of silverware would represent a successful season for the club), they must become more consistent.

That is why Thursday’s meeting with Roma is so important. True, the Europa League plays second fiddle to the Premier League in the eyes of most Tottenham fans. But victory in this competition brings with it a place in the Champions League, as well as that much-coveted trophy.

Postecoglou’s charges are seventh in the standings as things stand. A top-eight finish is required to advance directly to the round of 16, so there is still work to be done.

Tottenham were beaten in their most recent Europa League encounter, going down 3-2 to Galatasaray earlier this month. But they won their first three games of the league phase, conceding just one goal along the way.

Potentially tricky trips to Rangers and Hoffenheim await on matchdays six and seven, though, so Tottenham could do with a win when Roma come to town on Thursday.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Roma betting tips

Claudio Ranieri returns to London as his Roma team prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham to win

Tottenham lost their most recent home game to Ipswich Town, falling to a shock 2-1 defeat by the promoted team immediately prior to the November international break.

Generally, though, Spurs have been pretty strong at home. Before the Ipswich setback, they had won six matches on the trot in front of their own supporters, including two in this competition.

What is more, they are playing Roma at a good time. Remarkably, the Italian outfit are on their third manager of the season already.

Club legend Daniele de Rossi was harshly sacked in September, and his replacement Ivan Juric has since been succeeded by Claudio Ranieri.

This is the boyhood Roma fan’s third spell in charge of the club, but he has inherited a difficult situation. The Giallorossi are 12th in Serie A and 20th in the Europa League. Tottenham can take full advantage on matchday five.

⚽ Back Tottenham to win at 4/6 with Betano ⚽

Over 3.5 goals

Roma were beaten at the weekend, but they kept the score respectable in a 1-0 defeat by Napoli. Ranieri will hope his team are equally hard to break down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The problem is, Spurs are seldom involved in tight, cagey affairs. Postecoglou’s side will play on the front foot and, if they want to avoid leaving empty-handed, Roma may have to meet fire with fire at some point.

There is also the fact that Tottenham are without their two first-choice centre-halves in Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, plus goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

They coped admirably well without that defensive duo against Manchester City, but Spurs are patently a weaker team with Van de Ven and Romero absent.

All things considered, we predict goals in this one.

⚽ Tip over 3.5 goals at 5/4 with Betano ⚽

Brennan Johnson to score any time

Brennan Johnson dropped out of the Tottenham XI at the Etihad Stadium as Postecoglou reintroduced James Maddison,

Dejan Kulusevski was pushed out to Johnson’s usual berth on the right, but the Wales international is set to return to the Spurs line-up here.

Johnson has had a positive start to the season. Frustration with the forward among the Tottenham fan base had been growing, but he is the club’s top scorer with eight goals to his name.

Roma’s confidence is at a low ebb and facing a relentlessly attacking Tottenham team is unlikely to be the remedy they need.

⚽ Choose Brennan Johnson to score any time at 13/10 with Betano ⚽
