Ruben Amorim has joked he was already with a ‘star’ in Roy Keane when Ed Sheeran interrupted his post-Ipswich interview.
The iconic English singer, who sponsors and co-owns the Tractor Boys, accidentally walked in on Amorim’s first ever Sky Sports post-match talk after Manchester United‘s 1-1 draw at Portman Road.
Sheeran received backlash for coming into the chat and saying hello to pundit Jamie Redknapp but has since apologised, stating he wasn’t aware they were on air.
But Amorim has now insisted the situation didn’t need to be ‘over complicated’ and the incident ‘was nothing’.
Asked if the Sheeran saga showed how much attention and scrutiny comes with the Old Trafford hot seat, he said: “Yeah [it’s like this] especially in Portugal. In Portugal it is so difficult.
“Sometimes you over complicate things, it was nothing, a simple thing to say hello to one of the commentators.”
Smiling, he went on to joke he was already in the company of a star anyway, with him stood alongside Man United legend and Sky Sports pundit Keane during the chat.
“And I was with Roy Keane, who is a real star, so it was nothing,” he laughed.
Sheeran was supported by talkSPORT’s Jeff Stelling after the incident.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast on Monday, he said: “I didn’t think there was anything offensive about it at all.
“I have to say it’s his club, he’s a shareholder there, the club themselves say he’s massively important to promote Ipswich Town and I don’t know what was going on in the background as to why he appeared on screen, whether he was being encouraged to do that.”
The singer took to Instagram to admit he felt like a ‘b******’ for the interruption.
He said: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t realise he was actually being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie.
“Obz feel a bit of a b****** but life goes on. Great game though, congrats to all involved x.”
Amorim’s first game in charge saw Marcus Rashford score within the first two minutes to put the away side 1-0 up in their first meeting with Ipswich since 2002.
But the Tractor Boys got themselves back into the game quickly, with former Manchester City striker Liam Delap unlucky not to fire in an equaliser.
One eventually arrived for ex-Red Devils coach Kieran McKenna’s side.
Ex-Chelsea winger Omari Hutchinson netted just before half time to earn them a point.
Amorim takes charge of his first game at home on Thursday as the Red Devils welcome Bodo/Glimt of Norway in the Europa League.
“Everybody said to me it will be a special time,” the Portuguese manager continued.
“I just want to win the game, just to give that happiness to the supporters.
“Before the match it will be a new sensation but after it will be one more game and we want to win.”
