Open‘My intention is not to cheat’ – Darts star forced to apologise to rival mid-match at Players Championship

Cameron Menzies was forced to apologise to his opponent, Jim Williams, who called him out for his on-stage antics during their Players Championship match in Minehead.

The Scottish star, 35, secured a solid 6-2 victory over the Welshman on Friday but revealed after the match that tensions flared when Williams took issue with his dart-handling technique.

Menzies explained after the match: “It was a good start, Jim wasn’t Jim. He pulled me up for rattling my darts. I can’t deny I was doing it. But I would never do it tactically.

“I do apologise to Jim if it put him off. I’m not tactical but I’m fidgety.

“Jim told me to hold my darts. I do this all the time. The reason is years ago I had a set of darts, I broke one. So one dart was remade for me and was slightly different from the rest. So I always made that my first dart.”

Menzies continued: “I’ve kind of kept doing that. My intention is not to cheat, I’ll play fair.

“I felt better there than at the Grand Slam. But I think the Grand Slam environment caught me out a little bit.

“A bit of inexperience, I kind of got involved in the tournament. The Grand Slam was maybe a stepping stone to where I want to be. I’ve still got a long way to go.”

Reflecting on his recent performances, Menzies said that he felt more comfortable in this match than at the Grand Slam of Darts, with the latter’s intense atmosphere catching him off guard.

Menzies also confessed his discomfort towards his emotional outbursts on stage, admitting that he ‘hates it’.

“Recently a guy sent me a TikTok video and it shows my emotions and I hate it. I know I’m different and I act stupid. I genuinely hate it with a passion.

The darts pro explained that he feels more at home playing on the floor, where he’s spent much of his career, but knows he still has plenty to learn on the bigger stages.

“It’s because I want it so much. I want to be a player, I want to win titles. I’m not saying I’m good enough but I want to win titles. I’ve got a lot to learn on the stage.

Menzies is also known for his relationship with fellow darts star Fallon Sherrock, who he has been dating since 2021.

Sherrock made history in 2019 by becoming the first woman to defeat a man at the PDC World Championships.

Both Menzies and Sherrock have qualified for this year’s tournament at Alexandra Palace and a potential match between them would be a remarkable moment in darts history.
