The Premier League returns this weekend following the final international break of the calendar year, with Manchester City taking on Tottenham in the standout clash of the weekend.

News came through this week of Pep Guardiola’s decision to sign a one-year contract extension at Manchester City, ending any worries from the blue side of the city that the Spaniard may be on his way out of the club at the end of the season.

The club headed into last week’s break in something a tricky patch of form, with Manchester City currently on a four-match losing run in all competitions, the longest losing streak in Guardiola’s managerial career.

Back to back league defeats, as well as losses in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, has seen the Citizens lose their place at the top of the Premier League table, and now find themselves five points off the pace behind league leaders Liverpool.

Tottenham were the side who City lost to in the Carabao Cup which started this startling run of form, and Guardiola will be out for revenge and a positive reaction following the time off in the international break to refresh and recuperate ahead of the festive period in which games come even thicker and faster than before.

City fans will be quick to point out that all four of their recent losses have been away games, and that the side remain formidable at the Etihad, with the Manchester side having won five and drawn one of their six domestic matches on their home patch this season.

Tottenham also headed into the international break on somewhat of a low after suffering a surprise defeat at home to Ipswich in their final match before the break, becoming the first team to lose to the Tractor Boys in a Premier League fixture since 2002.

Combined with their defeat to Galatasaray in Turkey in the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou’s side have lost their last two matches, and three of their last five in all competitions.

Spurs make the trip to the home of the four-time defending champions having lost two of their last three matches, both against sides who were yet to win in the league prior, and their record of just five wins in 11 league games this season leaves much to be desired.

The north London side head into the weekend down in 10th in the table, though such is the incredibly tightly-congested Premier League table at the moment, the club sit just three points outside the top three.

Spurs have won just one of their last four meetings with Manchester City, though that did come in their most recent encounter at the end of last month, though City have been beaten only once in their last nine home games against Saturday’s opposition.
