Portugal vs Poland predictions

Portugal are on the verge of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Nations League by securing a top-two finish of their group.

Currently top of the table with 10 points from a possible 12, a draw against either Poland on Friday or Croatia on Monday would be sufficient for Roberto Martinez’s men to advance to the last eight.

Portugal were rather underwhelming at Euro 2024. They topped their group but famously lost 2-0 to debutants Georgia, albeit with a weakened team.

Portugal then needed penalties to scrape past Slovenia in the round of 16, before the tables were turned and they lost on spot-kicks to France.

Despite the impressive array of talent at their disposal, Martinez’s side won only two of five games within 90 minutes – a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Czech Republic and a 3-0 triumph over Turkey.

The jury thus remains out on Martinez. Portugal had breezed through their qualification group, but on the big stage they failed to live up to expectations.

That is why no one should read too much into their solid record at this stage of the Nations League campaign. The real test will come when Portugal face a fellow continental heavyweight in a knockout tie.

Still, you can only beat what is in front of you and Portugal have mostly done that so far. They beat both Croatia and Scotland 2-1 at home in September, before running out 3-1 winners in Poland last month.

Their only blip came in their most recent match, as Scotland successfully shut Portugal out in a 0-0 draw at Hampden Park.

Cristiano Ronaldo stormed off the pitch in frustration at the end of the game, but Portugal only had themselves to blame for their failure to break Steve Clarke’s men down. Yet despite that setback, Portugal are well on track to achieve their first Nations League objective.

Poland are still in with a chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals, but they are more likely to finish third and enter the relegation play-offs. They would no doubt settle for a point on Friday were they to be offered it.

Portugal vs Poland betting tips

Portugal should seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League on Friday night.

Portugal to win and both teams to score

The big news from the Poland camp is that Robert Lewandowski has had to drop out of the squad with a lower back injury.

Needless to say, that is a most unwelcome development for the Poles. Lewandowski might be 36 years old these days, but he remains one of Europe’s most lethal marksmen. Just look at his record for Barcelona this term: 19 goals in 17 games.

Yet we still would not rule out the possibility of Poland finding the back of the net in this one.

Portugal have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of their previous four Nations League encounters, and at times this team looks a little top-heavy.

However, we still expect the hosts to collect all three points in their final home game of the league phase.

⚽ Back Portugal to win and both teams to score at 15/8 with bet365 ⚽

Portugal to score over 2.5 goals

Poland have shipped nine goals in their first four games. In League A, only Israel and Switzerland have been leakier defensively.

Those numbers bode ill for their chances of keeping Portugal quiet throughout this match. For all their faults, Martinez’s side have the ability to overwhelm opponents with the sheer weight of their attacking quality.

Diogo Jota is not a part of the squad for this international break due to injury. Yet Portugal are still able to pick from a group of attack-minded players that includes Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao and Pedro Neto.

With the home crowd behind them in Porto, Portugal should score plenty here.

⚽ Choose Portugal to score over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with bet365 ⚽

Cristiano Ronaldo to score any time

At Euro 2024, it was clear that Ronaldo had become a burden on Portugal. It felt like every move had to end with their talisman at the top of the pitch taking a shot.

Yet it should also be pointed out that Portugal have not looked overly convincing without Ronaldo either.

Against Scotland in September, they needed the 39-year-old to come off the bench and score a late winner.

We should expect Ronaldo to be in the starting XI on Friday. The Al Nassr man will be keen to add to the record 133 goals he has already scored in international football.

For all the doubts about his all-round play, Ronaldo has shown that he can still score goals for Portugal, particularly against lesser opposition.

⚽ Select Cristiano Ronaldo to score any time at 4/6 with bet365 ⚽
