Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer on the planet right now – but he does not always get his way on the course.

The Texas-based world No. 1 regularly plays against legendary former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

Tony Romo is one of the best celebrity golfers

Now working as an analyst on CBS, Romo is one of the best golfers on the celebrity circuit.

The retired signal-caller has won the American Century Championship and qualified for the US Amateur Four-Ball with University of Texas player Tommy Morrison in 2023.

With a handicap of 1.6, Romo is no slouch on the course but 14 seasons taking hits from huge defensive linemen have had a toll.

“The way his body is, playing that many years in the NFL, he battles it every day,” said Scheffler told the Subpar podcast.

“He brings this little Hypervolt and his lacrosse ball and his bands out on the golf course with him every day and he’s basically warming up the entire round, so I really think it’s just battling his body.

“Because he’s a really, really good golfer. If his body would cooperate for him I think he’d be a lot better.

“But it’s tough for him getting beat up for that many years playing in the NFL.

“I mean, he plays golf every day basically when he’s home. He’s playing golf all the time — he loves it.”

Romo’s injury history may have saved Scheffler a few dollars over the years.

The close friends play money games and the pro golfer revealed his hilarious method for balancing the books.

“Tony always has the most risk in the game. So when he plays good he wins and when he plays bad he loses big because he’s got side games with everybody, and he never declines a hammer in wolf. He’s a crazy man,” he added.

“So when he loses, he loses big because if we are playing good we are going to make a bunch of birdies and double the bet and do all that stuff, and there’s been a couple of times where he’s played and he wrote checks to guys.

“And I never go to the bank, so I just keep it in my little pouch and whenever I have to pay him back, let’s say he owes me $1,000, so he writes me a check for $1,000. Then the next week I lose $600, I give him the check and go, ‘Alright, you owe me $400.’

“It is so much fun because he gets so mad. He’s like, ‘This isn’t real money! This isn’t fair!’

“I’m like, ‘Tony, it has your name on the check. This is what you gave me. I’m giving it back to you now.’”

Scheffler admitted that he doesn’t have any more checks in his stash, so he may have to reach for his wallet next time.

Thankfully he claimed more than half of the total PGA Tour prize pot in 2024.

He revealed the secret weapon that helped him earn $62million over the season during his chat with Subpar.
