New England boss Thomas Tuchel has vowed to ‘get a second star’ on the iconic Three Lions shirt.

Tuchel was confirmed as Gareth Southgate’s successor on Wednesday and will officially begin his duties on January 1.

In a video posted on England’s social media channels, Tuchel shared his bold message to fans that will no doubt get them excited for the 2026 World Cup.

“Hi guys, Thomas here,” Tuchel said.

“Quite a bit nervous, it’s my first message as the English head coach. I’m at Wembley, where else. And there’s also reason to be a bit nervous. I think that’s a good thing.

“I can promise you I’m very excited. I’m very honoured and I will do everything to that we can to qualify for the World Cup first of all, and then we have a successful World Cup, try to get a second star on our shirt.

“All the best and see you soon in the stadium.”

It is a bold call from Tuchel given England have famously won a trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

The Three Lions came agonisingly close to breaking the drought at Euro 2020 and Euro 20204, only to fall short in the final to Italy and Spain respectively.

England have also never made a World Cup final since the 1966 triumph, making it as far as the semi-finals in 1990 and 2018.

However, Tuchel and the FA firmly believe the 51-year-old is the right man to end nearly 60 years of hurt.

The England job represents Tuchel’s first foray into international management having previously had stops at Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

He also becomes the third foreign manager to lead England after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
